Learning to Read Your Roof—What’s Normal and What Is Not

Most homes in the U.S. have asphalt shingles on their roof. Variety of colors and styles, durability and low cost makes them the best roof replacement option. Asphalt shingles, though, also age with exposure to nature and some unnatural causes. It pays for homeowners to know what type of roof aging is normal and what’s not. Oberg Roofing & Remodeling Inc. presents this guide.

Aging

You can’t expect your roof to last forever. However, there are things you can do—and look out for—that can make it last. A roof ages as soon as shingles get exposed to nature. The sun’s UV rays and heat hasten roof aging, as does pollution, hail, snow, ice, falling tree limbs and foot traffic.

Curling

This is a common phenomenon in some shingles and not a defect. Asphalt aging and shrinking can result in curling at the edges. Ask about steel roofs that don’t curl from your trusted roofing contractor.

Cracks

Minor cracks appear on the shingles as they age. This is a normal weathering characteristic and not a cause for alarm. You’re OK as long as cracks do not penetrate through the shingle. When they do, make sure to contact your contractor as soon as possible.

Algae

Dark streaks down the roof are common in moist or humid areas of the country. They are due to algae growth on the shingles. Though not particularly attractive, they don’t stop the shingles from shedding water.

Granule Loss

A recently repaired or replaced roof will experience some granule loss. Extra granules are a part of the shingle manufacturing process by roofing companies. This type of granule shedding is common and not a cause for concern.

Blisters

They are often caused by under-ventilated attics or excessive use of plastic cement. Closed blisters do not affect the shingles’ performance and are not a cause for concern. Open blisters expose the asphalt and make the roof permeable. They need immediate attention. Buckling, deep cracks, and serious granule loss are also signs of abnormal roof aging.
