How do I know when to replace my roof?
If a leak is visible inside the home, it likely has caused additional damage to the roof deck and the drywall inside the home. Even if you don’t see a leak, it could still be time to replace your roof. If the roof is sagging, shingles are missing, the fiberglass mat is showing through, shingles look old and worn, shingles are curling at the edges, or shingles have little to no granules left on them, it may be time to replace your roof.

What is the best way to handle an insurance claim for hail damage?
- Before anything else, you must review your hail-damaged property insurance terms. You should be well informed of the insurance policy to understand what is within the coverage. Don’t forget to check on how the deductible works on your insurance.
- After the storm, it’s ideal to immediately call your insurance company to inform them about the hail storm. Make sure to report the situation to them within a few weeks. Inform them about your initial assessment of the damage to your roof. By this time, you should know if you need a roof repair or a complete roof replacement.
- Documenting everything that was damaged by the hail storm will serve you best. We advise taking many pictures of the storm damage on your roof under your insurance. You should also take note of the date and time of the storm, as well as the size of the hailstone. Complete and proper documentation will help the process to progress faster. Roofing companies also tend to appreciate the information collected, helping them with their repairs or replacement.
- You should also have a documented inspection from a professional roofer. Through a thorough inspection, your roofer can estimate how much the repair would cost. This will also help you know the amount you can request in your insurance claim.
- Setting an appointment with your insurance representative and roofing contractor is essential. A scheduled appointment will give you time to prepare your documents. During the personal meeting, it will be easier for you to mention your concerns and for them to answer right away.

What's the best way to handle a roofing emergency?
A compromised roofing system can cause leaks and pose risks to your safety. It may also not stand up well against the next storm or rainy days. When your roof experiences damage, make sure to contact a local roofer immediately. Keep in mind that delaying repairs will also cause the problem to get worse.
The first thing you need to do in case of a roofing emergency is to stay calm. Contact your roofer and then your insurer to notify them about the damage. For your safety, don’t attempt to repair or cover the roof yourself. Climbing the ladder and walking the roof is extremely dangerous, especially when the weather is bad.
If your roof suffered from storm damage, your contractor will arrive at your home as soon as the conditions are safe. They will then secure the affected area of the roof with tarps. Your roofer will also determine whether repairs or a complete roof replacement is necessary. While waiting for your roofer, you can take photographs of the damaged roof and write a detailed description of it. You can use these photos and documents when filing an insurance claim.
A roof can be compromised due to harsh weather, pests, or fire. Windows over 50mph are strong enough to tear shingles from the roof and expose the substrate. Debris or trees may also fall on your roof and cause significant damage. Even if your roof appears to be intact following a storm, it’s still best to have it inspected by a professional. Minor damage, when left unaddressed can cause major problems that can spread to other parts of your home.

-
Are metal roofs noisy?
No. While it might be logical to think that a metal roof will produce a lot of noise when it rains, this is not the case. On a residential home, there will be layers upon layers of building materials between the roof and the living space, significantly reducing the noise. A metal roof is just as quiet as any other roofing material.

How can I maintain my gutters in the winter?
Doing maintenance chores in the middle of winter is hardly appealing but it must be done if you want to avoid expensive repairs down the line due to damage from the harsh cold season. Winter gutter maintenance on steel roofs is best carried out before the cold sets in, but it’s also better late than never, so here are some tips to help you get started.
- Clear Debris – The most important but also the most unpleasant gutter maintenance task, clearing debris has to be done to prevent clogs from forming. Pay attention to seams and corners where leaves may gather to ensure the snowmelt is properly directed away from your home.
- Assess Hangers and Seams – Make sure your gutters are still firmly attached to your home by checking for gaps between the trough and your fascia. It’s critical that your gutters are securely attached because they might have to bear heavier loads due to snowfall.
- Check for Structural Damage – From the ground, give your gutter system a thorough check, looking out for stains, rot and other forms of moisture damage. If you spot damage, call a gutter and roof replacement pro right away to have it fixed.
- Inspect Diverters and Downspouts – To be properly directed away from your home, water should be drained at least 10 feet away on a downward slope from your foundation.

Does a leaky roof always require a replacement? Not all leaking roofs need to be replaced, especially if the structural integrity of your roof is still intact. Unless the roof is already approaching the end of its service life, some missing or cracked shingles can be repaired and replaced without stripping off the entire roof covering. If there are multiple leaks on different areas of the roof, better to ask for professional advice from local roofing companies.
-
Can I repair the roof myself?
While some small roofing repair jobs can be handled by homeowners, replacing a roof undergoes a complex process that will require help from experienced professionals. Contractors spend years on education, training, and certifications to have a competent understanding of different roofing systems and how mechanical components perform together. Hiring professional roofing companies will also grant you warranty coverage on materials and installation, saving you on maintenance costs in the long run.
