What New Homeowners Think Are Essential Features in a Home

The National Association of Home Builders’ 2019 “What Home Buyers Really Want” report revealed, laundry rooms and ENERGY STAR® products are the most-wanted features of new and aspiring homeowners. Most features that are in the top list are linked with savings in utility bills, extra storage and an improved outdoor area.

Top Features

Nearly 4,000 people who either bought a property in the last three years or plan on to buy a home in the next three years participated in the survey. The NAHB asked them to list rank 175 home features based on how important they are when purchasing a home.

The top ten most-wanted home features include a laundry room, ENERGY STAR windows, patio, ENERGY STAR appliance, ceiling fans, garage storage, exterior lighting, walk-in-in pantry, hardwood flooring and double kitchen sink.

Paying Extra for Energy Efficiency

Consumers may wish to have energy-saving features in their home, most aren’t willing to pay additional for them. While 68 percent of respondents say they would like an environmentally-friendly home, they aren’t ready for its costs. However, this thinking changed when they were told they could save around a thousand dollars in utility costs per year.

The survey also revealed that most consumers prefer an open layout for their kitchen and dining room. Seventy percent say they want the washer and dryer on the ground floor while 67 percent prefer 9-foot ceilings on the first floor. Moreover, more than half of the respondents want two or two-and-a-half bathrooms.
