Spring Gutter Cleaning time: Out with the Old (Leaves), in with the New (Sunshine!)

Caleb Oberg, April 2023

Ah, springtime! The flowers are blooming, the birds are returning from their winter vacay, and the world seems to be waking up after a long, chilly slumber. As much as I love the feeling of warm sunshine on my face and the scent of freshly cut grass, I must admit that spring comes with its fair share of chores. One essential task that always tops my spring to-do list is – you guessed it – gutter cleaning!

Cleaning Gutters

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Gutter cleaning? Er, not my favorite way to spend a sunny spring day!” Sure, it’s not the most glamorous job, but it’s a necessary one. In fact, gutters that become clogged with leaves, twigs, and other debris can cause significant damage to your beloved home over time (think water damage, mold, or even wood rot)! So, let’s roll up our sleeves and dive into the nitty-gritty of spring gutter cleaning!

First, a random fact for you! Did you know that the first gutter system dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization around 3000 BC? Talk about a timeless necessity!

Gutter Cleaning Process

The process of spring gutter cleaning is simple, yet beneficial. Begin by positioning your ladder at the edge of your gutter and carefully climb up. Starting from the downspouts, gently scoop out debris with your garden trowel, and place it in your bucket or trash bag. After you’ve cleared out the bulk of the debris, use a garden hose to wash away any small remnants and to ensure your gutters flow freely. Voilà! You’re well on your way to a free-flowing gutter system!

While traversing my home’s perimeter, I find it helpful to break the gutter cleaning into sections, a practice that makes the task feel less daunting. Plus, it ensures that I give every inch of my gutters my utmost attention!

In addition to the benefits of a clean and efficient gutter system, there’s something almost cathartic about the process. The feeling of accomplishment that sets in once your freshly cleaned gutters are sparkling in the spring sun is, well, unparalleled (in the world of home maintenance, at least).

My mother used to say, “A clean home is a happy home, and your gutters are no exception.” In the spirit of spring, let’s channel our inner Mary Poppins and whistle while we work our way through this essential task. So go on, give your gutters a little TLC this spring, and watch as your home thanks you with its newfound curb appeal! Happy cleaning!
