The Differences Between Stainless and Galvanized Steel Roofs

When it comes to steel roofs, there are two types that dominate the market: stainless and galvanized. While both roofing materials deliver outstanding performances, they each have their strengths and differences over the other. Oberg Roofing and Remodeling Inc. aims to shed light on the features of each of these roofing materials.

The Differences Between Stainless and Galvanized Steel Roofs

Stainless Steel

Preparation and Composition

There are about 60 different grades of stainless steel. It also has different categories such as Martensitic, Austenitic and Ferritic. Regardless of its grade and category, stainless steel is made by combining ordinary steel and chromium in various ratios when both elements are in their molten state. Once the mixture has cooled and hardened as a solid material, the stainless steel composite is then treated with an acid to remove any remaining impurities.

Stainless steel is basically two different metals combined to form a corrosion-resistant material.

Uses

While stainless steel is more expensive, it is also significantly more durable than galvanized steel. For this reason, stainless steel is used not only as a reliable roof replacement material but also as a component of skyscrapers, bridges, railways and airplanes to name a few.

Galvanized Steel

Preparation and Composition

Galvanized steel is created through a process called hot-dipping wherein ordinary steel is dipped into a pool of molten zinc. Basically, galvanized steel is just ordinary steel coated by a layer of zinc to give it anti-corrosion properties.

Uses

Galvanized steel is less sturdy compared to stainless steel. However, it is recyclable and more affordable. It’s mainly used for the construction of pipes and steel frames for homes. Note that galvanized steel is also resistant to rust, but not for as long a period as stainless steel.
